Black Friday 2026 Clothing Returns: Your Rights in the US, UK and EU, and a Checklist Before You Pay

Quick answer: Your right to return Black Friday clothes depends on where you shop. In the UK and the EU, online purchases come with a 14-day cancellation period that starts when you receive the item, no reason needed. In the US, there is no general federal right to return something you bought online because you changed your mind: the retailer's own return policy decides, so read it before you pay. In every market, keep proof of purchase, try clothes on with tags attached, and note the last day to start a return the day your parcel arrives.
Black Friday falls on 27 November 2026, the day after US Thanksgiving, and Cyber Monday on 30 November. Clothes are among the easiest things to buy on impulse during those days and among the most likely to need sending back, because fit and colour are hard to judge on a screen. Knowing what the law gives you, and what is only a store's goodwill, changes how you shop.
This guide sets out the basic rules in the US, UK and EU using official guidance from the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC), GOV.UK and the European Union's Your Europe service, then turns them into a checklist to use before and after checkout. It is general information, not legal advice; for a specific dispute, check the official sources or a consumer advice service where you live. For judging a garment before you buy it, see our guide to judging clothing quality online.
United States: the store's policy is the rule
A common assumption is that US law guarantees a few days to return anything. The FTC's Cooling-Off Rule gives a three-day right to cancel some sales made in person at your home, workplace or a seller's temporary location, but the FTC states that it does not cover sales "made entirely online, by mail, or telephone."
That means, for a change-of-mind return of clothes bought online, the retailer's posted policy is what you rely on. Return windows, whether you pay return shipping, whether you get a refund or store credit, and whether sale items are final are all set by the store. State consumer laws can add to this, so your state's consumer protection office is the place to check if a store's policy seems unclear.

Two federal protections still matter during Black Friday:
- Shipping on time. Under the FTC's Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule, a seller must ship within the time it states, or within 30 days if it states no time. If it cannot, it must tell you and offer the choice to accept the delay or cancel for a refund. If you cancel, the FTC's business guide says refunds to a card or cash payment are due within seven working days.
- Disputing a card charge. The FTC explains that you can dispute credit card charges for goods you "didn't accept or weren't delivered as agreed". Your letter must reach the card issuer within 60 days after the first bill with the error was sent to you. It is a backstop, not a return policy, so try the seller first.
United Kingdom: 14 days to cancel, then 14 days to send it back
GOV.UK's guidance on distance selling sets out the timeline clearly. When you buy online, by phone or by mail order:
- You can tell the seller you want to cancel within 14 days of receiving the item, without giving a reason.
- After telling them, you have another 14 days to send the item back.
- The seller must refund you within 14 days of receiving the returned item, including the standard delivery charge you paid. If you chose a more expensive delivery option, only the standard cost has to be refunded.
- The seller can reduce the refund if the item has been used or damaged, which is why you should try clothes on as you would in a shop and keep tags on.
Exceptions to know for clothes: GOV.UK lists personalised or custom-made items, and sealed items that cannot be returned for health or hygiene reasons once opened, such as underwear. Those can be refused unless faulty.
If the item is faulty, that is a separate right. GOV.UK says a seller must repair or replace an item returned within six months unless they can prove it was not faulty when sold, and customers have up to six years (five in Scotland) to claim.
European Union: 14 days from delivery
The EU's Your Europe service says that for online, phone or doorstep purchases you can cancel within 14 days without giving any justification, with the period for goods running from delivery. If the deadline lands on a non-working day, it moves to the next working day.
- Return postage: Your Europe says you pay the cost of sending items back within the cooling-off period unless the seller offers to pay, or did not tell you about the cost before you bought.
- Exceptions: custom-made or clearly personalised goods are among the items excluded.

Elara builds the look from what you own, then lets you try it on.
- Faulty items are handled under separate guarantee rules, which Your Europe advises checking for the country where you bought.
If you shop from a seller based outside your own country, the rules where the seller is based, and its own policy, may also apply, so check before you buy.
The pre-checkout checklist

Two minutes before you pay can save a return later:
- Find the return policy and read three lines: the return window, who pays return shipping, and whether you get a refund or store credit.
- Check whether sale items are excluded. In the US, "final sale" can be a store policy. In the UK and EU, the 14-day cancellation right is a legal right for online purchases in general, with the exceptions above, rather than something the store grants.
- Check where the seller is based. A UK or EU address usually means the 14-day cancellation rules above. A seller elsewhere may have very different terms.
- Pay with a credit card where you can, for access to the dispute rights the FTC describes in the US.
- Screenshot the product page and the policy. Prices and policies can change after sale events end.
- Check the size chart against a garment you own, not against your usual size. Our clothing size guide explains how.
After the parcel arrives: a 14-day return routine

- Day 1: open it, check it matches the order, and write the last day to cancel in your calendar (14 days from delivery in the UK and EU, or the store's window in the US).
- Days 1 to 3: try everything on at home with tags attached, ideally with the shoes and layers you would wear with it. Check fit sitting down and moving, not just standing.
- By day 7: decide. Keep the original packaging, labels and receipt or order email for anything going back.
- When you return: use the seller's returns process or written notice, get proof of postage or a drop-off receipt, and keep it until the refund arrives.
- If the refund is late: in the UK the seller should refund within 14 days of getting the item back; follow up in writing, then use official consumer advice routes. In the US, a card dispute is the backstop if the seller does not resolve it.
FAQ
Do I have a legal right to return clothes I bought online in the US?
Not in general. The FTC's Cooling-Off Rule does not cover purchases made entirely online, so change-of-mind returns depend on the retailer's return policy. Charges for items not delivered as agreed are different, and the FTC explains how to dispute those with your card issuer.
How long do I have to return clothes bought online in the UK?
You have 14 days from receiving the item to tell the seller you want to cancel, and then another 14 days to send it back, according to GOV.UK. The seller must refund you within 14 days of receiving the return.
Who pays return postage in the EU?
Usually you do, according to Your Europe, unless the seller offers to pay or did not tell you about the cost before you bought.
Can a shop refuse to take back underwear or swimwear?
In the UK, GOV.UK lists sealed items that cannot be returned for hygiene reasons once opened, such as underwear, as an exception to the 14-day right. Items still sealed, and faulty items, are treated differently.
Do Black Friday sale items have the same return rights?
In the UK and EU, the 14-day cancellation right applies to online purchases in general, with the exceptions listed above, rather than depending on whether an item was on sale. In the US, it depends on the store, and some retailers mark sale items as final, so check before you buy.
