What to Wear to Winter Wonderland London: Rides, Rink and Rain

Last updated: November 2026

Quick answer: Hyde Park Winter Wonderland runs from 19 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 (closed Christmas Day), and London's December averages are about 9°C (48°F) by day and 2°C (36°F) at night with around 11 rainy days, according to the Kew Gardens climate normals. Wear a warm waterproof coat over a knit, water-resistant boots with thick socks, gloves and a hat, and bring only a handbag or small rucksack no bigger than A4, which is the size limit in the official prohibited items list.

Winter Wonderland is mostly an evening outing: the site opens in the morning but the lights, rides and crowds peak after dark, and the official tickets guide lists closing at 10pm with last entry at 9:30pm. That means hours outside in London's damp December cold, standing in queues, sitting on metal ride seats and walking on ground that is often wet. This guide covers what the weather means for your clothes, one outfit for a standard evening, what to wear on the ice rink, how to dress for rain, and the venue rules that affect what you bring.

Winter Wonderland 2026 dates, hours and tickets

The 2026 to 2027 season opens on Thursday 19 November 2026 and closes on Sunday 3 January 2027, closed only on Christmas Day. Most days open at 10am, some open at 11am, 12pm or 2pm, and every day closes at 10pm.

According to the official tickets guide, entry has to be pre-booked for a date and arrival hour, for every visitor aged 2 and over. As of November 2026 the guide lists three entry tiers: off-peak slots, standard slots at £5.50 and peak slots at £8.25, with peak slots mostly later in the day and at weekends. Rides, the ice rink and shows are paid separately. Once inside, you can stay as long as you like, which is why dressing for a long evening matters.

London weather in late November and December

Expect cold, damp air rather than deep freezes. The Kew Gardens 1991 to 2020 normals give a December average high of 8.9°C and low of 2.3°C, with 59 mm of rain spread over about 11 days. Late November is a little milder, at 11.6°C and 4.3°C.

What that means for your outfit:

  • Damp cold feels colder than the number. At 4 to 6°C after sunset with wind and drizzle, a wool coat that is not water-resistant can soak through in an hour.
  • Your feet decide how long you last. Wet grass, puddles between stalls and long queues make waterproof footwear the single most important piece.
  • Layers beat one huge coat. Heated bars and indoor shows are warm, so you want to open or remove a layer and put it back on outside.

Outfit 1: a standard evening visit

For an evening at Winter Wonderland, wear a thermal or merino base layer, a jumper, a warm water-resistant coat that covers your hips, dark jeans or trousers, waterproof boots with wool socks, and a hat, scarf and touchscreen gloves.

Why each piece earns its place:

  • A water-resistant parka or padded coat rather than a smart wool overcoat. Long enough to cover your hips keeps you warm on ride seats and benches.
  • A thin base layer under a jumper gives you warmth without bulk, so you can still move freely on rides. Our guide to thermal base layers explains merino versus synthetic.
  • Dark bottoms. Wet benches, spilled mulled wine and splashes from puddles show less on navy, black or charcoal than on cream or light denim.
  • Touchscreen gloves and a hat. You will be taking photos and paying with your phone, and hands and ears get cold fastest when you stand still in a queue.
  • A crossbody bag within the size limit. The official list allows only handbags or small rucksacks no larger than A4, warns that large bags may not be accommodated, and points visitors to lockers near Marble Arch.
  • A Christmas jumper is a fun extra. Keep it as a layer under your coat. The official rules prohibit fancy dress costumes or items that could form part of one, so a full costume is worth leaving at home.

Outfit 2: what to wear on the ice rink

For skating, wear fitted, flexible layers (leggings or stretch trousers, a fleece or knit), thin gloves, and a pair of long socks that come above the boot. Skip long scarves and floaty coats that can catch or trip you.

The official ice rink advisory says skate hire is included in the ticket, the rink operates in all weather with no refunds for bad weather, and visitors should bring suitable clothing and a spare pair of socks on wet days. It also says children aged 12 or under must be on the ice with a supervising adult. In practice:

  • Long socks, not trainer socks. Hire skates rub at the ankle, and a sock that sits above the boot prevents blisters.

  • Gloves on the ice. Falls happen, and gloves protect your hands on hard, wet ice.
  • Stretch over stiff. Skinny jeans restrict your knees; leggings under a skirt, or stretch trousers, let you bend and balance.
  • A water-resistant outer layer if it is drizzling, since the rink keeps operating in the rain.
  • Spare socks in your bag. Put them on after skating so you are not walking around the site in damp ones.

Outfit 3: dressing for a wet day

On a rainy day, swap to a hooded waterproof jacket over a warm mid layer, waterproof boots with a grippy sole, and quick-drying trousers, and leave suede shoes and long hems at home.

London averages about 11 rainy days in December, so the odds are good that your visit is wet or follows rain. A few rules:

  • Hood over umbrella. Umbrellas are awkward in tight crowds and on rides. A hood keeps your hands free.
  • Waterproof boots, not suede. Suede marks with water and salt. If you do get it wet, our guide on cleaning suede shoes and boots explains how to rescue them.
  • No trailing hems. Wide-leg trousers and maxi coats wick up puddle water. Cropped or tapered trousers tucked into boots stay drier.
  • Pack a small dry layer. A thin spare jumper or socks in a zip bag turns a soggy evening around.

Venue rules that affect what you wear and carry

A few official rules change what you can bring, so check them before you dress:

  • Bag size: handbags or small rucksacks only, no larger than A4 or a standard handbag.
  • Costumes: fancy dress costumes or items that could form part of one are on the prohibited list.
  • High-visibility clothing is on the prohibited list, so leave a hi-vis cycling vest at home.
  • Food and drink: your own food is not allowed (except baby food or food needed for medical reasons), and only factory-sealed water or empty reusable bottles and cups are accepted.
  • Cameras: smartphones and handheld cameras are fine; professional kit, GoPros, tripods and selfie sticks need accreditation.
