Quick answer: Jaipur in December averages about 25°C (77°F) by day and 10°C (50°F) at night, with almost no rain (about 4 mm for the month, based on 1991 to 2020 normals for Jaipur airport). Dress in layers: a breathable cotton or linen base for sunny afternoons, a warm mid-layer such as a light wool cardigan, quilted jacket or shawl for mornings and evenings, and closed, cushioned shoes for fort ramps and stairs. Pack one properly warm layer for late December, when nights can drop close to freezing.
December is peak season in Jaipur: clear skies, palace weddings and long days of fort-hopping. The catch is a 15 degree swing between a bright lunchtime and a dark rooftop dinner. This guide turns that swing into a simple packing plan, with what to wear for forts, the old city, temples, evenings and wedding functions, plus what is worth buying once you are there.
What Jaipur weather in December means for your clothes

Expect warm sun at midday and a real chill after sunset, so plan every outfit around a layer you can take off and put back on. The climate table for Jaipur airport (1991 to 2020 normals) puts the average December high at 25.1°C and the average low at 9.9°C, with about 3.8 mm of rain in the whole month. January is a little colder, with an average low of 8.4°C.
Two details matter more than the averages:
- The evening drop is fast. Once the sun goes behind the Aravalli hills, open-air spaces such as rooftops, fort ramparts and wedding lawns cool quickly. Lonely Planet's Amber Fort guide notes that mornings and evenings can be chilly from December to February.
- Cold snaps happen. Jaipur's lowest recorded December temperature is 0°C, and late December often brings cold-wave alerts across Rajasthan. If you travel between Christmas and New Year, pack one layer warmer than the averages suggest.
Because it barely rains, you do not need waterproofs. You need sun protection by day (sunglasses, a cap or stole, sunscreen) and insulation by night.
The Jaipur layering formula: base, mid, outer
Think in three layers you can mix, rather than separate day and night outfits. It keeps your bag light and works for nearly every plan.
- Base layer (daytime): cotton, linen or a cotton-modal blend. Kurtas, shirts, tees, straight trousers and midi dresses with sleeves. Natural fibres breathe in the 20s°C sun and dry quickly if you sweat on fort stairs.
- Mid layer (morning and evening): a fine merino or cotton-cashmere sweater, a cardigan, a quilted vest or a wool shawl. This is the layer you add at 5 pm.
- Outer layer (late evenings and cold snaps): a light down or quilted jacket, a wool overcoat for weddings, or a heavy shawl. You may only wear it after dark, but you will be glad of it at a 10 pm dinner.
- Accessories that do double duty: a large stole or dupatta works as sun cover at noon, a head covering at a gurdwara or some temples, and a scarf at night.
What to wear in Jaipur: outfits by plan
These four plans cover most December itineraries. Each one uses the same three-layer system.
1. Fort day: Amber, Jaigarh and Nahargarh

Wear stretchy, breathable trousers or a long kurta with straight pants, a light shirt or tee, and cushioned sneakers or walking sandals with a back strap. Carry a cardigan or quilted vest in your bag for the early start and the ride home.
Why: the walk to Amber Fort is a zigzag path from the road to the gates (about 10 minutes, according to Lonely Planet), and the fort itself has many stairways and uneven stone floors. It opens at 8 am, and arriving early beats the crowds but also means a cool start. Skip slippery soles, long trailing hems and heavy bags. Bring water, sunglasses and a cap or a stole for the exposed courtyards.
2. Old city bazaars and temples

Choose a knee-length or longer kurta, shirt dress or tunic over trousers, with shoulders covered, plus flat shoes you can slip off easily and a light dupatta or stole.
Why: you will step out of your shoes at temples, so laces slow you down. Covered shoulders and knees are respectful at religious sites, and some Jaipur temples now ask for it. In 2023, IANS reported that the Jharkhand Mahadev temple asked devotees to avoid shorts, mini skirts and ripped or distressed jeans, and that the Sadashiv Jyotirlinga Mahadev temple asked for traditional attire. Rules vary by temple and change over time, so check signs at the gate. Carry a pair of socks in your bag: stone floors are cold in the early morning.
3. Rooftop dinner or Nahargarh sunset

Layer a chunky knit or fine wool sweater over your daytime base, add wide-leg trousers or jeans, and bring a shawl or light jacket. Closed shoes or ankle boots keep your feet warm on open terraces.
Why: average lows near 10°C feel colder on a windy roof than the number suggests. A shawl is the most flexible piece here: it looks dressed up, packs flat and adds real warmth over a sweater. If you are heading to Nahargarh for sunset, bring the jacket, not just the knit.
4. Wedding functions at a palace or heritage venue

For daytime functions, silk, chanderi or cotton-silk outfits are comfortable in the sun. For evening functions, choose a heavier fabric (velvet, brocade, raw silk) and plan your warmth from the start: a matching velvet or pashmina shawl for a lehenga or saree, a fitted thermal layer underneath, and a bandhgala, Nehru jacket or wool overcoat over a sherwani or kurta.
Why: many Jaipur weddings hold the sangeet, pheras or reception on open lawns or courtyards late into the night. A shawl that matches the outfit is better than a coat you will take off for photos. For drapes that keep the outfit visible, see our guide on how to drape a shawl over a saree or lehenga, and for thermals that stay invisible, read how to stay warm in a saree, lehenga or sherwani.

What to buy in Jaipur: block-printed cotton

If you want one souvenir you will actually wear, buy block-printed cotton: a stole, a kurta or a quilted jacket. Sanganeri hand block printing, from Sanganer just outside Jaipur, received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2010, according to Incredible India. It is known for fine floral motifs such as buta, buti, jaal and bel on white and off-white grounds, printed by hand with carved teak blocks. Bagru, also near Jaipur, is another block-printing centre.
How to shop it well:
- Look for small irregularities. Hand-printed cloth shows slight variations where one block impression meets the next. A perfectly uniform repeat is more likely to be screen or machine printed.
- Check the reverse. On hand-printed cotton the colour usually shows through less crisply on the back than on the front.
- Ask about dyes and washing. Natural-dye prints can bleed in the first wash, so wash them separately in cold water.
- Think winter-ready. A block-printed quilted jacket or a light Jaipuri quilt-style jacket is a practical buy for the same evenings you are packing for.

FAQ
How cold is Jaipur in December?
Average December temperatures in Jaipur run from about 10°C (50°F) at night to 25°C (77°F) in the afternoon, based on 1991 to 2020 normals for Jaipur airport. Late December cold snaps can push nights much lower; the December record low is 0°C.
Do I need a jacket in Jaipur in December?
Yes, for evenings. Days are warm enough for a shirt or kurta, but after sunset a sweater plus a shawl or light jacket is comfortable, and a warmer coat helps for late-night weddings or late December travel.
What should I wear to Amber Fort?
Breathable layers, comfortable trousers or a long kurta, and cushioned closed shoes with good grip. The approach is a zigzag path and the fort has many stairways and uneven floors. Bring water, sunglasses and a cap or stole.
Is there a dress code for temples in Jaipur?
There is no single city-wide rule, but covered shoulders and knees are respectful, you remove your shoes before entering, and some temples post their own guidance. In 2023 the Jharkhand Mahadev temple asked visitors to avoid shorts, mini skirts and distressed jeans.
Can I wear shorts in Jaipur in December?
You can on a hotel property, but you will rarely want to: mornings and evenings are cool, and longer hemlines are more comfortable and more respectful in the old city and at religious sites.
What fabrics are best for Jaipur in winter?
Cotton and linen for the day, wool, cashmere-blend or pashmina for evenings, and velvet, brocade or raw silk for evening weddings.
