What to Wear in Manali in December: Layers, Snow Gear and 4 Outfits

Last updated: October 2026

Quick answer: Pack for two climates. Manali town (about 2,050 m) averages 0.3°C at night and 13.5°C by day in December, according to 1991 to 2020 climate averages, so a thermal base layer, a fleece or wool mid-layer and a windproof, water-resistant outer jacket cover most days. Day trips up to Solang, the Atal Tunnel or Sissu are colder, wetter and windier, so add a waterproof insulated jacket, snow pants, mittens and waterproof boots with deep grip.

December in Manali swings between sunny cafe afternoons on Mall Road and real snow a short drive up the valley. The trick is not one heavy coat. It is a set of layers you can add and remove as you move between a heated cafe, a sunlit road and a snowfield. This guide covers what the weather actually does, the layering system that works, four ready outfits for the trips most people take, and what to leave at home.

Manali weather in December: what you are dressing for

Expect frosty nights, mild sunny days and a chance of snow, with much colder conditions higher up. Climate averages compiled by Climates to Travel give Manali a December average low of 0.3°C and high of 13.5°C, with about 55 mm of precipitation spread over roughly three days. January is colder still, averaging -1.1°C to 10.5°C, and the same source notes snow can fall from December to early March.

Three things change how it feels on the day:

  • Sun versus shade. At this altitude a sunny street can feel warm by midday, while a shaded lane or a north-facing slope stays icy. That gap is why layers beat one thick coat.
  • Altitude on day trips. The Atal Tunnel sits at a mean altitude of 10,050 ft (about 3,060 m), roughly 1,000 m above Manali town, according to Discover Kullu Manali's tunnel status tracker. Every step up the valley is colder and windier.
  • Snow days change the plan. The same tracker shows that in past Decembers police limited tourists to Solang after heavy snow, allowed tunnel trips only in daytime windows, or let through only 4x4 vehicles. Dress for a long wait in the cold, not just the destination.

The three-layer system that works in Manali

Wear three thin layers rather than one bulky one: a base layer that moves sweat off your skin, a mid-layer that traps warmth, and an outer shell that blocks wind and wet snow. The US National Weather Service advises layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing and a hat, and staying dry and out of the wind, which is exactly what this system does.

  • Base layer: a merino wool or synthetic thermal top and leggings. Avoid cotton thermals for snow days, because cotton holds sweat and melted snow against your skin. Our guide to merino vs synthetic thermals explains which weight to buy.
  • Mid-layer: a fleece jacket, a wool sweater or a light down vest. This is the layer you take off in a heated cafe and put back on at sunset.
  • Outer layer: in town, a wool coat or a windproof jacket is enough on dry days. For snow, switch to a waterproof insulated jacket with a hood.
  • Extremities: a wool cap, a neck gaiter or muffler, and mittens. The National Weather Service notes that mittens snug at the wrist are warmer than gloves, and India's NDMA has also recommended mittens over gloves in its cold wave advice, as reported by the Free Press Journal.

4 Manali outfits for December

Each outfit below is built on the same base and mid-layer, so you are swapping only the outer pieces and shoes from day to day. That keeps a week's packing to one suitcase.

1. Mall Road and Old Manali cafe day

On a dry, sunny day in town, a knee-length wool coat over a turtleneck and thermal top is warm enough and still looks good in photos. Wear straight jeans or wool trousers with thermal leggings underneath, and waterproof leather ankle boots for icy patches on side lanes. Add a wool shawl or muffler you can loosen at lunch.

  • Why it works: the coat blocks wind in the shade, and you can open it in the sun without getting cold at the core.
  • Swap for men: a wool overshirt or quilted jacket over a crew-neck sweater, dark chinos over thermals, and lace-up boots.

2. Solang Valley snow day

Snow play means kneeling, sitting and falling in wet snow, so your outer layer has to be waterproof, not just warm. Wear a waterproof insulated jacket and snow pants over your thermals and fleece, mittens, a beanie, waterproof snow boots and sunglasses for the glare. Snow suits and boots can be rented in Manali town, at Palchan on the way up and near the slopes at Solang; Travel Coffee's rental guide finds day quotes ranging from about ₹200 to ₹800 a person. A rented suit is only the shell, so still wear your own thermals, fleece and wool socks underneath, and check that rented boots are dry and have real tread before you pay.

  • Why it works: jeans soak through within minutes of sitting in snow, and wet denim stays cold for the rest of the day. Waterproof pants keep your base layer dry.
  • Do not forget: sunglasses and sunscreen. Sun reflecting off fresh snow is strong even when the air is cold.

3. Atal Tunnel and Sissu day trip

This is the coldest outfit of the trip. North of the tunnel, Sissu and the Lahaul valley sit higher and more exposed than Manali, and you may spend time standing on ice by the river or waiting in traffic. Wear your full base and mid-layer, then a long hooded down parka or insulated waterproof jacket, a neck gaiter you can pull over your nose, a thick wool cap, insulated gloves or mittens, and waterproof winter boots with deep lugs for grip on packed snow and ice.

  • Why it works: a longer parka covers your hips and thighs, which lose heat fast when you stand still in wind.
  • Check before you go: road access in December depends on snow and police orders, so check the current status on the morning of the trip and plan to turn back at Solang if needed.

4. Bonfire night and New Year's Eve dinner

Evenings in a hotel garden or a cottage with a bonfire call for something dressier that is still warm. Try a velvet or wool blazer over a fine-knit turtleneck, wool trousers or a knit midi skirt with thermal tights, ankle boots, and a long wool coat over your shoulders. Men can wear a shawl-collar wool cardigan or a jacket over a merino sweater and dark trousers.

  • Why it works: wool and velvet look festive and keep their warmth when you move away from the fire.

  • Fire safety: stand back from the flames and keep loose shawls and long fringes tucked in. Natural fibres like wool are a safer choice near a fire than shiny synthetic party fabrics, which can melt.

Shoes and socks for snow and ice

Bring one pair of waterproof boots with deep lugs and good ankle support, and wear wool socks, not cotton. Sneakers and fashion boots with smooth soles are the most common packing mistake: packed snow and black ice on Manali's slopes are slippery, and canvas shoes soak through in minutes.

  • What to look for: a waterproof membrane, a grippy rubber sole with lugs at least a few millimetres deep, and enough room for a thick sock. Our winter boots buying guide explains insulation grams and waterproof ratings.
  • Pack two pairs of wool socks per day of snow play, so you can change into a dry pair at lunch.
  • For town only: waterproof leather ankle boots are enough on dry days.

Manali December packing list (one week)

  • 2 thermal tops and 2 thermal leggings (merino or synthetic)
  • 1 fleece jacket and 1 or 2 wool sweaters or turtlenecks
  • 1 wool coat or windproof jacket for town
  • 1 waterproof insulated jacket and 1 pair of snow pants (or plan to rent snow gear)
  • 2 pairs of trousers or jeans for town days
  • 1 dressier outfit for a New Year's Eve or bonfire dinner
  • Wool cap, neck gaiter or muffler, mittens, a light pair of gloves for the phone
  • Waterproof boots with grip, plus 6 to 8 pairs of wool socks
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm

Mistakes to avoid

  • Relying on one heavy jacket. You will overheat in cafes and on sunny streets, then have nothing to adjust.
  • Wearing jeans in the snow. They get wet and stay cold.
  • Cotton next to your skin on active days. Sweat and snowmelt make it cold and clammy.
  • Forgetting the face. A neck gaiter or muffler you can pull up over your mouth makes the wind on exposed viewpoints far easier, which matches the National Weather Service advice to cover your mouth in extreme cold.
  • Packing for the town forecast only. The tunnel and Sissu are about 1,000 m higher than Manali town, so plan for colder weather on those days.
