Elara vs ChatGPT Virtual Try-On
Since 1 October 2026, ChatGPT can show you clothes on yourself. When a clothing or accessory listing appears in a ChatGPT shopping answer, a Try on button sits next to it: tap it, take or upload a selfie, and ChatGPT generates an image of you wearing the item. It is a genuinely useful shortcut when you are deciding whether to buy something. But planning outfits is a different job from previewing one product, and that is where Elara, an AI personal stylist built around your own wardrobe, comes in.
The ChatGPT details below come from OpenAI's release notes for 1 October 2026 and its Shopping help article, with reporting from Engadget and TechRepublic, as of October 2026.
Quick verdict
Choose ChatGPT virtual try-on if you are shopping for a specific new piece, already use ChatGPT, and want a quick preview of that one item on you while comparing products and prices in the same chat.
Choose Elara if you want to plan what to wear from the clothes you already own, for real occasions and on a calendar, with try-on as one part of styling rather than the whole thing.
How ChatGPT virtual try-on works
According to OpenAI's release notes, the feature is "available in ChatGPT on mobile and web." Here is the flow OpenAI describes:
- Ask ChatGPT for clothing or accessories. Product listings appear in the answer.
- Tap Try on on a listing, then take or upload a selfie. ChatGPT Images generates the try-on.
- Your selfie is saved as a reference photo for future try-ons. You can change or delete it in Settings, then Personalization, then Reference photos.
- You can also upload a photo of a clothing item or accessory in a conversation and ask how it would look on you.
- Products you like can be saved to Favorites or a folder in your ChatGPT Library.
Engadget reports the images come from ChatGPT Images 2.5, which OpenAI released in September. OpenAI's help article says product results are "selected independently by ChatGPT and are not ads", with ads shown separately, and that Shopify product data reaches ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog.
OpenAI is clear about the limits: "Try-on images may not represent the product or your appearance exactly," and they do not guarantee fit or size, so check the merchant's measurements and return policy.
Where the two overlap
Both let you see clothes on yourself before you commit, and both are previews rather than a fit guarantee. Elara includes virtual try-on too, with results kept in your Gallery. If all you need is "would this jacket suit me?", either can answer it.
Where they differ: one product vs your whole wardrobe
ChatGPT's try-on is built around a product listing: one item, found while shopping, shown on you. Its shopping features are about finding and comparing things to buy.
Elara starts from what you already own. You add your clothes to a digital closet, individually or several at once from a single full-look photo, and the AI stylist builds complete outfits from them. That changes the questions you can ask:
- "What do I wear to a winter wedding on Saturday, without buying anything?"
- "Plan my outfits for a three-day work trip."
- "I bought this blazer. What does it go with in my closet?"
ChatGPT can talk through ideas in general terms, but it does not keep a structured closet of your clothes, so it cannot reliably build an outfit from the specific pieces you own unless you describe or upload them each time.
Planning, memory and shopping
Elara adds the parts that make styling a habit rather than a one-off:
- Daily Outfits suggests a look for each day.
- Calendar lets you plan outfits ahead of events.
- Style Play lets you experiment with combinations.
Want this styled from your own closet?
Elara builds the look from what you own, then lets you try it on.
- Saved Outfits and a Wishlist keep what you like in one place.
- Shopping Mode and wardrobe-gap suggestions focus on what is genuinely missing, and Hybrid Mode mixes owned pieces with new ones.
- The Style Graph learns your taste over time.
ChatGPT's strengths are breadth and convenience: you can ask anything, compare products and prices across many retailers in one conversation, and preview the item on you without leaving the chat.
Privacy
Both features involve photos of you, so read the settings. OpenAI says your try-on selfie is saved as a reference photo you can change or delete in Personalization settings. Engadget and TechRepublic both note that, by default, content from personal accounts may be used to improve OpenAI's models unless you turn that off under Data Controls, so review that setting before uploading a photo. For Elara, check Elara's privacy policy for how your closet and photos are used.
Pricing and availability, as of October 2026
ChatGPT virtual try-on: available in ChatGPT on mobile and web, according to OpenAI's release notes. OpenAI's pages do not list plan or country restrictions for try-on.
Elara: available on iOS and Android, with Free, Style, Pro and Elite plans and a 14-day free trial.
Choose ChatGPT virtual try-on if...
- You are shopping for one specific item and want a quick look at it on you.
- You already use ChatGPT for research and want to compare products and prices in the same chat.
- You do not need your wardrobe stored or your outfits planned.
Choose Elara if...
- You want outfits built from the clothes you already own.
- You dress for specific occasions and want a stylist that remembers your closet.
- You want to plan looks on a calendar and get a daily outfit.
- You want shopping suggestions based on real gaps, not just the next product.
Verdict
ChatGPT's try-on is a strong addition to AI shopping: quick and handy when you are deciding on one piece. Elara is a different tool, a stylist for the wardrobe you already have, with try-on as one of several features. Many people will use both: ChatGPT to preview something new, and Elara to work out what it goes with and when to wear it.
